After helping recover 30 stranded vehicles and return hundreds of lost number plates during recent rains, Dubai Police volunteers are now set to play a bigger role in the emirate’s emergency response efforts.

The shift follows the deployment of 49 volunteers across 77 locations under the ‘Your Neighborhood Officer’ initiative, where they worked alongside authorities to manage flooded areas, assist motorists, and return 279 lost vehicle number plates.

Brigadier Ali Khalfan Al Mansoori told Khaleej Times that the next phase will focus on expanding the volunteer network and strengthening early response capabilities.

“We are working on increasing the number of volunteers and extending coverage across more areas in Dubai,” he said.

    Focus on early action

Authorities said the recent response highlighted the value of having trained volunteers on the ground to act quickly before situations escalate.

“Their presence on the ground enabled early detection of incidents and immediate action, whether locating lost vehicle number plates or assisting stalled vehicles and clearing affected roads,” he said.

“Using data and past observations allows us to identify high-risk locations and respond proactively,” he added, noting that this helps reduce response time and minimise damage.

Priority areas are mapped using historical data, public reports, and coordination with relevant authorities.

    Smooth operations during rains

Despite the scale of the weather event, operations were carried out without major challenges, Dubai Police said.

“The response was smooth due to prior preparedness and strong coordination between teams and volunteers,” Al Mansoori said.

He added that Dubai Police ensures volunteers are well-trained through specialised programmes covering safety fundamentals, emergency response procedures, and site management, along with providing them with essential equipment and operational guidance.

    Community plays key role

Officials said the initiative reflects a broader push to involve residents directly in emergency response.

“We are working to empower community members to be part of the response system, not just recipients of services. This strengthens sustainability in crisis management,” he said.

Residents have been urged to report incidents early, follow safety guidelines, and avoid crowding affected sites.

    Lessons shaping future response

Dubai Police said the experience will help refine future response strategies.

“The experience confirmed the importance of readiness, fast coordination, and community involvement,” Al Mansoori said.
