‘Koffee With Karan’ Season 9: Salman Khan set to open show solo

Salman Khan is reportedly set to kick off the ninth season of Koffee With Karan and take over Karan Johar’s famous couch, this time, all by himself.

The superstar is expected to be the opening guest on the new season, which is slated to stream on JioHotstar around Diwali. While the makers are yet to announce the line-up officially, reports citing Variety India say Salman has agreed to appear on the premiere episode, marking his third outing on the celebrity chat show and his first fully solo sit-down.

    Salman is not done, bro

Salman’s history with Koffee With Karan is brief but memorable. His first appearance came in the Season 4 premiere in December 2013, when he was joined by his father, veteran screenwriter Salim Khan. The episode was watched closely, not least because Salman had stayed away from the show’s first three seasons and because the actor was then seen as an unlikely fit for Karan’s inner-circle-heavy chat format.

He returned in Season 5 for the show’s 100th episode, accompanied by brothers Arbaaz and Sohail Khan. That family-led format suited Salman’s easy, unfiltered presence, but it also meant viewers have never really seen him navigate the couch alone.

That is what makes the reported Season 9 booking particularly interesting. A solo Salman episode would leave more room for the actor to address his films, friendships, public image and the industry in his typically no-frills manner, without siblings, co-stars or a carefully matched pairing to steer the conversation.

Over 20 years of coffee (and controversy)

Koffee With Karan first premiered on November 20, 2004, opening with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Across eight seasons, it has moved from being a glossy celebrity chat show into an enduring pop-culture pull.

The format has changed with the times. The early seasons were built around large Hindi-film stars and the familiar Karan Johar orbit. Later seasons added younger actors, athletes, directors, spouses and social-media personalities.

The show has also become a digital conversation machine, with its rapid-fire round, rankings, dating disclosures and occasional awkward silences often becoming as widely discussed as the films its guests are promoting.

Season 8, which streamed in 2023, arrived in the OTT era and featured newer talent, including Sara Ali Khan, Ananya Panday and Aditya Roy Kapur. Season 9 is now expected to take that shift further, with reports suggesting even shorter segments and a guest mix spanning Bollywood, South cinema, OTT and the creator economy.

Ahaan and Aneet among rumoured guests?

Yes, Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda have been named in the speculative Season 9 line-up circulating online. The Saiyaara pair are reportedly being considered for a joint episode, which would mark their Koffee With Karan debut if it comes through.

Other names and combinations doing the rounds include Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna for a post-marriage sit-down interview, as well as Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Akshaye Khanna for what could be a Dil Chahta Hai reunion of sorts. Samay Raina and Farah Khan are also being considered, bringing a creator angle to the mix.

However, there’s no guarantee that these pairings will make the final cut. Still, the line-up, if even partly accurate, signals an attempt to retain the show’s old-school Bollywood charm while expanding its appeal to younger film audiences and digital-first viewers.

Though an exact launch date is still under wraps, the show is expected to be available on JioHotstar.
